Melbourne Girls' College was opened on February 17th 1896 with just 13 founder students and Miss Cushion as Headmistress. Early classes were held at Spring Street, where the building was originally designed with classrooms, a library and an assembly hall. At that time it had a strong focus on traditional subjects such as English, Maths, French, Music and Art.
