What does "Acre" mean?

The acronym A for acre stands for an area of land equal to 43,560 square feet or 10 square chains (66 feet per chain), or 1/640 of a square mile (5,760 feet per side). The origin of the use of acres in measurement dates back to the Middle Ages when it was used as a basic unit of field sizes in agricultural practices. Acres were also used by Old English law to describe an area that could be tilled with one ox-plow within one day's work. Today an acre can refer to different measurements depending on where you are located. In the United States it is the traditional method of measuring land while in many parts of Europe, hectares are more widely used instead.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Using Acres
