What does METC mean in EDUCATIONAL

The Marine Education Training Center (METC) is a non-profit organization that provides training and education opportunities to help individuals understand and become stewards of the marine environment. We offer curricula, workshops, lectures, interactive activities, and other programs that cover topics such as ocean conservation, fisheries management, marine habitat protection and coastal development issues.

There are many ways you can get involved with METC! You can attend or volunteer at our programs and activities, join our mailing list or sign up for our newsletters to stay up-to-date on all things METC, make donations to support our mission, or even host an educational event with us! The METC offers a variety of courses ranging from basic introductions to more advanced material in marine sciences. We also have specialized events hosted throughout the year. Topics include oceanography, ecology, physical processes of nearshore areas and estuaries, natural resources management techniques, regulations related to coastal ecosystems' protection and more.

METC programs are currently offered in locations throughout California in both English and Spanish at science centers or schools; including San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), Balboa Park Visitor Center/San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM), Estuary Institute (EI) & marine research facilities located in San Diego County. We are also working toward expanding our reach throughout Southern California in the near future.

The METC was founded in 1988 by dedicated members who had a vision of providing quality education related to the incredible natural resource we have right here in San Diego — our ocean! Throughout its 33 years of operation we have been determined to provide individuals with knowledge about this amazing resource so it can be properly respected and conserved for generations to come.

Our goal is to make learning about the marine environment as easy and accessible as possible for everyone -no matter their age! We offer classes online as well as lectures both virtually and in person at various locations throughout San Diego County; there are also guest speakers invited periodically who come share their expertise relating directly to marine sciences topics. Additionally we facilitate field trips into local areas where they can visualize what they've learned during lectures first hand!
