History
Massey Energy Company was founded by George J. Massey Sr., a former miner from West Virginia who purchased a small coal mine near the town of Bradshaw in 1920. That first operation grew steadily over the next few decades as Massey expanded to more than 30 mines throughout the Appalachian region. During World War II, when demand for both steel and electricity surged, Massey's production capacity increased greatly as it began supplying components for military projects all over the country. After the war ended in 1945, however, production declined significantly due to new regulations that forced many smaller mines to close their doors. Despite this setback, the company managed to remain afloat by diversifying its operations into other energy-related businesses such as engineering services and equipment leasing.
Expansion
The 1970s saw a period of significant expansion for Massey Energy Company as it continued to grow throughout Appalachia and beyond into states like Alabama and Kentucky. In 1985 it formed Enerco Inc., a joint venture with Eastman Chemical Company that provided engineering services for coal-fired power plants all over the world. The company also began leasing out its own heavy construction equipment to other mining operators during this time period. By 2000 it had become one of the largest producers of metallurgical coal in North America with sales reaching nearly $1 billion annually by 2003 (the last year before its sale).

In 2011 Alpha Natural Resources acquired Massey Energy Company for $7 billion dollars making it one of the largest acquisitions ever made in the history of the mining industry at that time period. This acquisition gave Alpha full control over all of Masseys' assets including more than 50 underground mines located around Appalachia which produced around 10 million tons of metallurgical coal per year at peak production levels before being sold off by Alpha in 2017 following market pressures due to trends within global commodities markets at that time period..
