Cysteamine is a medication used to treat nephropathic cystinosis, a rare autosomal recessive disorder. It works by reducing the concentrations of cystine in cells, and has been used with good results to slow the progression of the disorder.

Cysteamine works by reducing levels of cystine in cells and preventing damage caused when excess amounts accumulate. This action helps to prevent further damage from occurring and can slow down the worsening of symptoms associated with cystinosis.

As with any drug, there are potential side effects associated with taking cysteamine. These include nausea, headache, rash, dizziness, abdominal pain, vomiting and constipation. Additionally, it may cause liver problems or changes in blood chemistry that need immediate medical attention.

Cysteamine is usually given as an oral dosage form or through direct intravenous infusion into a vein (IV). It can also be given rectally as an enema or topically as a cream. The dosage should always be tailored according to individual requirements and supervised by a qualified physician or pharmacist.

Treatment with cysteamine generally begins between 1—2 months after diagnosis and involves long-term maintenance therapy. Generally speaking it can take up to 2 years for full therapeutic effects to become evident but improvement should be seen within the first 8 weeks of treatment.
