What does APM mean in AWARDS & MEDALS

The Australian Police Medal (APM) is an award granted to members of Australia’s state, federal, and territorial police forces for distinguished service. It is awarded annually by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister for Home Affairs.

Each year, up to 500 recipients are conferred with the APM in recognition of their exemplary service in protecting and serving their community.

Members of all police services operating within Australia can be nominated for the award, including those from state, territory and federal organisations.

Nominations must come from a police officer's current or former boss or senior colleague. Nominations should include a brief description of why they believe a certain person should receive the medal as well as evidence that they have contributed over and above their usual duties.

In addition to being recommended by a supervisor or senior colleague, nominees must have demonstrated exceptional performance during the course of their duties. They should also demonstrate exceptional courage c evidenced by physical risk taken voluntarily; unique leadership qualities and outstanding qualities of individual responsibility;innovative approaches in achieving results; or dedication to duty in difficult circumstances.

If successful, your nomination will be forwarded to the Office of the Governor-General where it will be considered alongside other candidates for this year’s awards cycle. Once approved by both chambers of Parliament, recipients will be presented with their medals at an official ceremony.

Yes – recipients may wear insignia on both formal dress uniforms and everyday uniforms while attending official functions such as funerals and parades. This insignia includes a miniaturised version of the medal riband which can either be pinned or sewn onto your clothing.

No – although recipients are now honoured with both a medal and certificate upon receipt, financial reward cannot be expected beyond this recognition.
