The Mid Continent Public Library was founded in 1963 by a group of civic leaders from Jackson County Missouri who wanted to bring a public library to their area. The original name was “Mid-Continent Regional Library District” but it eventually changed to “Mid Continent Public Library” after it expanded beyond Jackson County into Clay County Missouri. In 1972 MCPL opened its first branch outside of Jackson County which led to many more branches throughout the two state service area over time.
