It consists of 40+ bands playing both classic and modern music, 17 aid stations with water and sports drinks at every mile marker, an awards ceremony for top finishers in each division, along with an inspiring finish line ceremony honoring fallen service men and women of all branches of military service.
History
The idea for the MCM began in 1973 when four officers from Quantico Marine Base decided that they wanted to host a marathon race within their own community. After much success among veteran Marines and other members of the military, it was opened up to public registration in 1979 with almost 3500 runners participating that year alone! The race has grown exponentially since then and now nearly 30,000 runners flock to Arlington each year to take part in this iconic event through our nation’s capital!
