The Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) is a historic American railroad that operated in the Midwest and East from 1881 to 1969. The MCR was originally formed in 1881 by a group of investors led by William Henry Vanderbilt through the merging of two separate railroads, the Detroit & Pontiac Railway and the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. The MCR provided passenger service throughout its route, reaching from Detroit, Michigan to Boston, Massachusetts via New York City.

The Michigan Central Railroad runs from Detroit, Michigan to Boston, Massachusetts via New York City. This route covers more than 1,100 miles and travels through multiple states including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, New York and Massachusetts.

In addition to passenger services, the Michigan Central Railroad also offered freight services for transporting goods between states. It also had a variety of freight cars specifically designed for specific forms of cargo such as coal or stock.

Construction on what became known as the "Michigan Air Line" began in January 1880 with tracks being laid down in Ontario and then through Indiana before reaching its final destination in Detroit.

From start to finish it took 8 months for crews to complete 900 miles of track laying for what was eventually dubbed as "the longest piece of continuous line." As a result this made traveling much quicker and more efficient between Great Lakes cities and those further east such as Boston or NYC.

The original founders were a group of investors led by William Henry Vanderbilt who formed what become known as "The Grand Trunk Western" in 1881 which eventually merged with another railway company called "The Detroit & Pontiac Railway Company" creating what became known as “The Michigan Central”.
