What does MBBS mean in ACADEMIC DEGREES

Meaning

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, wherein medicine deals with the scientific study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases while surgery deals with diagnosis through physical examination, performing operations to correct deformities or treat diseases and other related therapeutic treatments. MBBS encompasses all medical sciences such as anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, pathology and many more.

Specializations

After completing their MBBS degrees, many students opt to pursue further specialization in any specific branch like obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, general surgery or cardiology etc. There are numerous specialties within each sub-specialty which need more specialized knowledge about medical sciences. In India, doctors are also taught alternative therapies such as Ayurveda or Unani medicine alongside modern medicine during their MBBS course.

Qualifications

To be eligible for an MBBS degree program one must have completed 10+2 or equivalent qualification in science stream. Most medical universities conduct entrance tests to shortlist candidates for their admission process after which follows face-to-face interviews or written tests followed by counselling rounds based on merit list generated from the marks obtained by a student in 12th grade exams combined with entrance test results if applicable. After successfully completing all these rounds a student can get admission into his/her preferred university's MBBS program.

Practical Training

Apart from classroom studies and practical training within labs under skilled clinicians and professors guidance there are rotations at hospitals as well during the final years where students gain real time experience working with patients under supervision before receiving their certificates upon graduation. Moreover internships provide an even more valuable experience before embarking upon clinical practice after becoming licensed doctors.
