What does MASA mean in BRITISH MEDICINE

The Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability (MASA) is used to measure an individual's ability to swallow as well as to identify any possible swallowing difficulties. It provides a systematic approach to assess and document abnormality in the processes associated with oral, pharyngeal and esophageal phases of swallowing.

MASAs are administered in order to assess the effectiveness of treatments for dysphagia (swallowing disorder) among individuals who are at risk for developing dysphagia or have already been diagnosed with it.

A MASA typically consists of assessing the patient's ability to swallow foods and/or liquids, measuring muscle activity changes during swallowing, testing for food aspiration and evaluating the patient's overall nutrition status.

While various healthcare professionals such as physicians, speech-language pathologists or dietitians can perform MAST assessments, speech-language pathologists are most commonly responsible for performing these types of assessments as they have specialized knowledge in evaluating swallowing disorders which makes them particularly qualified for this type of training.

The length of time required depends on multiple factors such as complexity of condition being evaluated but typically results can be obtained within 1-2 weeks after completion of assessment provided all recommendations are followed by patients and/or care givers afterwards.
