African Public Service Day is an annual event established by the African Union in 2008 to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community. It takes place every June 23rd, and serves as a platform to reflect on how public servants can help promote development on the continent.

African Public Service Day was created with the goal of recognizing, promoting, and celebrating public service across Africa. This day provides an opportunity for governments, civil society organizations, and citizens to come together and discuss ways in which they can contribute towards achieving good governance for all Africans.

The idea for this day was first put forward by then-President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo during the 31st Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union in 2004. After several years of advocacy work led by Member States, it was officially declared at the 15th Ordinary Summit in 2008.

On African Public Service Day governments, civil society organizations, and citizens are encouraged to engage with one another through events such as debates, seminars, workshops or forums. They are also asked to pay special attention to innovation in public service delivery and recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution over their career in helping others through their work.

The day brings together government officials, civil society representatives and members from private sector companies interested in contributing towards development agendas on the continent. Additionally members from international organizations such as United Nation agencies also join in conversations as guests or speakers.

Different countries celebrate this day differently depending upon their individual cultures and traditions; however common activities include awards ceremonies for distinguished civil servants, recognition of innovative ideas for improving public services at both national and sub-national levels; conferences for exchanging best practices; debates amongst experts from different fields; lectures from renowned personalities; workshops aimed at capacity building initiatives on various issues pertaining to public service; among others activities that further aim to recognize excellence within the field.

There are three official awards which are bestowed annually during Africa's annual celebration of its public servants – One award recognizes “Outstanding Female Civil Servant” another “Outstanding Male Civil Servant” while a third category entitled “The Outstanding Institution Award” recognizes outstanding contributions by organisations that implement numerous development initiatives throughout Africa.
