What does MAL mean in MEDICAL

Malignancy is a medical condition in which certain cells become abnormal and uncontrollably divide and multiply, ranging from benign tumors to more serious cancers.

A diagnosis of malignancy may be made through various tests involving scans or biopsies to obtain tissue samples or fluids for examination under the microscope. Diagnostic imaging such as PET scans, CT scans and MRI scans may also be used.

The prognosis for each individual case depends on many factors such as overall health of the patient, type of cancer involved and response to treatment.

Common signs and symptoms associated with malignancy include lumps or masses, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, fever, persistent pain, swelling or redness at the site of occurrence, changes in skin color or texture and any other unusual changes in bodily functions.

Preventing malignancy involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise; avoiding smoking; limiting alcohol consumption; eating a balanced diet; protecting skin against sun exposure; practicing safe sex; getting timely checkups; avoiding contact with known carcinogenic substances; and knowing one's family history regarding cancer risk factors. Vaccines against certain types of cancer-causing infections (e.g., HPV) may also help prevent malignant forms from developing.
