The Mandaue City Amateur Basketball Association (MACABA) was founded in 2004 by a group of civic-minded individuals led by former professional basketball player Aurelio “Maca” Cabaron. His vision was to give young athletes from low-income communities a chance to compete at higher levels, as well as to help foster a culture of sportsmanship and respect amongst players. To achieve these goals, Cabaron held monthly meetings with local coaches and administrators to discuss matters relating to amateur basketball in Mandaue City. In 2005, with support from the city government and private sponsors, MACABA launched its first league tournament for teams around Mandaue City. The tournament included 16 teams divided into two divisions: North Division and South Division. The tournament continues annually today under the banner “Battle of the Cities” – a fitting symbol of MACABA’s mission to bring together different communities through sport.
