What does APRU mean in UNIVERSITIES

The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) is an alliance of leading research universities in the Asia-Pacific region. Its mission is to shape the future through joint research, innovative programs, policy engagement and high-level collaborations among member universities. APRU works as a platform to facilitate collaboration between research institutions and promote inclusive international dialogue, understanding and innovation.

APRU currently consists of 51 member universities located in 17 economies across the Asia-Pacific region. Member universities include some of the most prestigious research institutions in the world, such as Harvard University, Stanford University, National University of Singapore and University of Tokyo.

To further its mission, APRU engages in numerous collaborative activities for its members. These include annual meetings with senior university leaders, working groups on topics such as sustainability and mobility, joint projects focused on advancing education opportunities in developing countries, research collaborations and student exchange programs.

Membership at APRU is open to any accredited university or higher education institution located in an economy around the Asia-Pacific Rim that has at least four academic units focused on undergraduate or graduate teaching or research activity in natural sciences/engineering/medical sciences/social sciences/humanities disciplines supported by full-time faculty members conducting independent research. Institutions must submit a Statement of Interest outlining their commitment to partnership and collaboration with other APRU members. Being part of the association enables access to a global network dedicated towards promoting higher education excellence in the Asia-Pacific region; opportunities for faculty and student exchange; advanced access to higher education resources from around the world; access to special initiatives such as funding opportunities for collaborative projects; access to policy advice from experts located around the region; knowledge sharing amongst peers regarding best practices for managing complex universities in this era of rapid change; possibility of setting up a Strategic Alliance Agreement with one or multiple peer institutions; possibility for establishing joint institute agreements among peer institutions; etc.

Our resources page contains materials that may be helpful for our member universities including reports published by our working groups, guides and toolkits produced jointly by our Secretariat Office or Working Group Chairs, publications produced independently by each university which focus on issues related to higher education within each country and globe edition conference proceedings which feature keynote speeches from past Annual Presidents' Meetings (APMs), Summits & Conferences (S&Cs) available online exlusively for our members.
