The conference sponsors 19 sports, with men's lacrosse being the most recent sport added to their lineup. The MAAC consists of seven core schools: Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Marist College, Monmouth University, and Niagara University. Along with these seven schools there are four associate members: Rider University, Sacred Heart University (CT), Siena College and St. Peter’s University. Additionally, Stony Brook University is an affiliate member for men’s lacrosse only.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference was founded on August 15th 1980 as a joint effort between six founding institutions; Canisius College ,Fairfield University ,Iona college ,Manhattan college ,Niagara university and Siena college . In 1989 it was decided that Marist college would join the league as its seventh founding member . Over time more colleges were added as associate members such as Rider university in 1997 and Sacred heart university (CT )in 1999 . Stony brook university also joined in 2007 as an affiliate member for men’s lacrosse only . Since then the MAAC has grown to include eleven institutions from six states : New York , Connecticut , New Jersey , Pennsylvania Delaware and Massachusetts .
