An advanced practice nurse (APN) is a professional nurse with a master's degree or higher in nursing. APNs provide direct patient care, often in specialty areas such as mental health, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, neonatal intensive care, or cardiac medicine. APNs may also work in research and consulting roles.

Advanced practice nurses receive specialized educational training that includes both theoretical and practical components. This includes obtaining a master's degree or higher in nursing or another related field. They must also pass several national certification exams.
