What does LP mean in MEDICAL

A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a medical procedure in which a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is taken from the lumbar region in order to inspect it for potential abnormalities.

Generally speaking, LP is considered safe and most people experience minimal side effects. However, individuals may experience some minor pain or discomfort during the procedure. The risks associated with LP are very rare and can include infection, bleeding, headaches, nerve damage, and back pain.

The actual procedure itself generally takes about 30 minutes; however, this varies depending on whether or not other tests are done at the same time. You should plan on being at the hospital or clinic for around 2-4 hours while they monitor your condition after the procedure has been completed.

Before a lumbar puncture is performed you will typically be asked to lie down on your side with your knees tucked into your chest while wearing only an examination gown. Your doctor will then clean your lower back area before sterilizing it using an antiseptic solution and then may inject local anaesthetic into the skin where the needle will go in.

After having had an LP you may feel some soreness in your lower back due to the needle insertion site. You may also notice some bruising along your spine from where the needle was inserted but this should fade soon after. Most of these after effects resolve themselves within about 24-48 hours following the procedure.
