What does LLRC mean in GENERAL

The primary goal of the LLRC is to promote national unity, reconciliation and coexistence in Sri Lanka by identifying grievances, assessing acts committed by both sides, outlining lessons that can be learned from these experiences, and making recommendations for positive change.

The LLRC has conducted wide-ranging investigations across all areas affected by war. It has consulted victims, witnesses and experts alike in order to assess various issues such as human rights abuses, violations of international humanitarian law, displacement and resettlement, truth-telling activities and reparations.

The LLRC report outlines a number of recommendations for how Sri Lanka can move forward towards reconciliation after its civil war. These include calls for an independent inquiry into alleged human rights violations; greater engagement with diaspora communities; institutional reform; measures to ensure equal access to public services; improved communication between government bodies and local communities; land restitution programmes; truth-telling initiatives; increased access to justice; establishing effective transitional justice mechanisms; improving socio-economic development opportunities for formerly excluded groups such as internally displaced persons; enhancing gender mainstreaming policies in education; strengthening demilitarisation processes in Northern Province of Sri Lanka etc.
