Definition
LHH is an acronym for Laguna Honda Hospital. Located in San Francisco, California, this hospital was founded in 1866 and serves as a unique care facility for elderly or disabled patients who require long-term care and rehabilitation services. The hospital also offers elder care services such as palliative and hospice care, physical therapy, case management, dental services and more. It is one of the few remaining full-service long-term care hospitals in the United States today.
History
The origin story of Laguna Honda Hospital begins in 1866 when county supervisors appropriated $54,000 to purchase 33 acres of land near the southern end of San Francisco's Twin Peaks area for a permanent almshouse facility to provide health treatments to those in need. After four years of construction, the new hospital officially opened its doors in April 1870 and was named “Laguna Honda Home for Invalids” after the Spanish word for “healing spring.” Initially only housing up to 350 patients, it quickly expanded its capacity over time (by 1895 it could house up to 600 patients). As diagnosis shifted from religious based beliefs to medical ones, conditions at Laguna Honda improved drastically over the years; by 1975 amenities included a rehabilitation clinic and therapeutic pool, state-of-the-art nursing unit expansions, spas and gyms - much different from its original state!
