History

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra was founded by Gottlieb Fuhmann, who had previously established the first public city orchestra in Germany in 1741. This new orchestra was officially called “Concert zum Gewandhaus” or “Concert for the Cloth Hall”, taking its name from the trade hall where it performed, located right in the heart of Leipzig. At first it was sponsored by local merchants with limited resources but soon expanded to eight members under its first director Johann Adam Hiller. Later on Carl Friedrich Zelter took up leadership and this period saw a great growth of popularity for this orchestra which included performances at royal courts such as that at Weimar by Goethe himself!

Development

In 1835 Mendelssohn took up directorship and this period saw enormous artistic growth for the LGO that continued into later decades under famous figures such as Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss among others. Following World War II there were several changes of direction for this legendary ensemble going from traditional symphonic forms to more modern approaches. With Conductors Kurt Masur and Herbert Blomstedt it regained its renowned standing as one of Europe's finest orchestras. Both these conductors have also been influential in introducing younger generations to classical music with their innovative series ‘Young people concerts’ which have featured prominently all around Germany since 1959.
