What does LCPD mean in PHYSIOLOGY

LCPD is shorthand for Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, a rare childhood condition that affects the hip joint causing pain and potential complications.

Generally speaking, LCPD usually affects children between about five and nine years old. However, there have been cases of the condition affecting younger or older children as well.

The most common symptom of LCPD is pain in the hip area which can become severe when left untreated. Other symptoms include stiffness in the hip joint and limitation of movement such as difficulty when trying to bend or rotate the legs at the hips. In some cases, limping may be present.

Diagnosis typically involves physical examination by a doctor combined with X-rays to investigate any changes in the bones around the hip joint. Additional imaging tests may be required to confirm more severe cases of LCPD.

Treatment depends on factors such as age and severity of symptoms but generally involves rest periods interspersed with physical therapy exercises as well as braces or splints to reduce strain on the affected joint. In more extreme cases surgical intervention may be required to realign affected parts within the hip joint or even partial replacement of some elements in order to restore movement and reduce pain.
