What does LCOA mean in COMMISSIONS

The Latino Commission on AIDS is committed to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Hispanic/Latino communities by developing and fostering public awareness, advocacy and capacity-building. We provide outreach, education, training and technical assistance to organizations serving Latinos through programs and initiatives rooted in social justice and cultural sensitivity.

The Latino Commission on AIDS serves both individuals living with HIV/AIDS, their families, caregivers and affected communities along with those at risk for HIV infection in the US & Puerto Rico.

LCOTA provides long term support initiatives through its Community Capacity Building Program which has included creating national collaborations among service providers; empowering clients to become advocates; promoting quality services through technical assistance, increased access to healthcare & decrease stigma associated with HIV infection. In addition it provides workshops to community members on health care options available as well as trainings on how they can protect themselves from contracting HIV.

The LCOAT does not directly provide financial assistance or other immigration related services such as applications for disability or housing benefits. However, it does provide information about available resources that may be able to help people access them.

There are several ways you can get involved with LCOTA by becoming a volunteer at one of our events and fundraisers, attending meetings or trainings to increase your awareness about issues affecting Latinas/os at risk for HIV/AIDS, participating in online campaigns and advocating for changes in policies that may impact Latinas/os living with or vulnerable to acquiring HIV infection. Yes! LCOTA offers educational materials such as brochures, flyers and posters focusing on preventing HIV transmission among the Latino community all of which are available in Spanish, English or bilingual versions. All these materials can be downloaded from their website.

Yes! Many of their educational materials focus specifically on women's health issues related to HIV prevention including how condoms should be used correctly and safely, recognizing signs of abuse both physical and psychological types prevention methods for substance abuse during pregnancy and providing referrals when needed.

Yes! Unlike many traditional organizations dealing with disease-prevention they openly recognize lesbian/gay lifestyles while working towards eliminating discrimination based on sexual orientation as well as gender identity.
