What does LASG mean in ALLIANCES

The Legal Alliance to Stop Geoengineering (LASG) is a collective of legal professionals, scientists and advocates working to expose and prevent manipulation of Earth's climate and ecosystems through geoengineering. Our goal is to ensure that all geoengineering activities are regulated under current environmental laws and that the precautionary principle governs any future activity.

LASG engages in international advocacy efforts as well as local campaigns aimed at raising awareness of geoengineering practices and their potential impacts on public health, the environment, natural resources, and global climate systems. We provide legal advice and services, create educational materials, write policy documents, engage with policymakers and lawmakers, raise public awareness through outreach events and media interviews.

LASG provides strategic guidance on relevant international laws as they pertain to geoengineering activities as well as assistance with developing policy documents that promote responsible regulation of such activities under current environmental laws or treaties. We also provide assistance with filing lawsuits against governments or corporations for non-compliance with existing regulations or for violations related to harmful activities involving geoengineering.

LASG works towards preventing hazardous impacts from geotechnological practices by advocating strongly for responsible use regulations; informing policymakers about potential risks associated with certain technologies; providing evidence-based information about potential ecological impacts; conducting research into existing regulatory frameworks; promoting technological innovation that reduces risk; monitoring compliance with established standards; sponsoring litigation against entities suspected of engaging in unethical or dangerous practices; creating opportunities for public discourse among stakeholders including advocacy groups and industry experts.

Organizations involved in LASG include universities, research centers, legal firms, civil society organizations, media outlets, think tanks and foundations dedicated to advancing human rights law with regard to climate change issues or protecting life-supporting ecosystems from harm caused by technological interventions such as geoengineeering activities. Most recently we have partnered with major international investment firms to fund research into land-use planning strategies that address greenhouse gas emissions while minimizing disruption due to extreme weather events resulting from climate change.
