What does LAM mean in MEDICAL

Lymphangiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare, progressive lung disease that primarily affects women of reproductive age. It is characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the walls of various lymphatic vessels.

The most common symptoms associated with LAM are shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing. Other symptoms may include difficulty breathing while lying down, rapid heart rate during activity and fatigue.

Unfortunately at this time there is no cure for LAM. However there are treatments available to help manage symptoms and slow progression of the disease.

To be diagnosed with LAM, your doctor will likely perform physical tests as well as imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs to determine if you have any abnormal cell growth in your lungs. Your doctor may also take a sample from your lungs which can be examined under a microscope to look for signs of LAM cells.

If left untreated, those with LAM may develop serious complications, including respiratory failure and pneumothorax (collapse). Additionally, some people with severe cases may experience swelling in their arms or legs caused by fluid buildup due to enlarged lymph vessels or air trapping in their lungs.
