Pain relief during labor is not required however many women choose it because they find it helpful in managing contractions that can become intense with each surge in intensity throughout labor. There are a number of different options available such as breathing exercises, massage therapy, hydrotherapy or medications such as an epidural (a form of local anesthesia).
