KGMO was founded in 1970 as KCLT (Cape Light & Talk) under Stevenson Broadcasting Incorporated headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1987, Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired KGMO and changed it to a middle-of-the road format using call letters KTKK (Kool Thousand). Sinclair eventually sold the station in 1998 to Fairfield Broadcasting where it returned to its oldies format but changed its call letters back to KGMO once again; it was then that Townsquare Media acquired ownership of the station in 2004 and have maintained ownership ever since.
