History

KGF was established as a mining region around 1875 by British settlers who came to India from England. In 1890, gold deposits were discovered at KGF and started large-scale operations of gold extraction. During its peak production period from 1920-34, it produced an average of about 300 kg per month and employed more than 4,000 people. At one point in time, it accounted for over 80 percent of India’s total gold production. After 1934, however, production decreased significantly due to low profit margins resulting from expensive labor costs and mechanization of mines. As a result, the British government decided to close down KGF’s operations in 1947 after India gained independence from Britain.

Reopening & Rehabilitation

In 2003 the Indian government reopened some mines at KGF with significant investments towards modernizing them. A rehabilitation project was also started with funding provided by central and state governments to help local villagers who had been affected by decades-long mining activity at KGF. This project has involved providing education facilities along with assistance for sustainable agricultural practices among other initiatives aimed at promoting socio-economic development among communities living near KGF.

Current State Of Affairs

The current state of affairs at Kolar Gold Fields are not very encouraging as most exploration activities have yielded no significant results so far due to lack of modern technological equipment for efficient extraction procedures that involve deep digging into earth layers such as those found around KFG sites. Moreover there are concerns regarding potential environmental damage that could arise due to further excavation activities as well as safety issues related to workers operating such machinery underground which could pose serious risks if proper mechanism are not opted for during operations.
