History

Houston Ellington Field began its life in 1921 as Ellington Airport, built on a former cotton plantation. Historians credit local aviator Eddie Knoblock with constructing the first airfield on this site, at his own expense. In 1929, Boeing Aircraft Corporation purchased the land and used it as a base of operations for their commercial aircraft business until it closed in 1945 due to World War II activities. In 1952, the city of Houston acquired the land from Boeing and renamed it "Houston International Airport". Since then, it has been known as Houston Ellington Field and has grown to become one of Houston's busiest airports.

Facilities

The airport consists of four runways; two asphalt surfaces and two concrete runways that serve both commercial airlines and military aircraft.
