The original group that eventually became known as AOT formed in February 1862 under Major General Albert Sidney Johnston in Bowling Green, Kentucky. After General Johnston’s death at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6th, General Braxton Bragg took over command of AOT. Under Bragg’s leadership, AOT made a name for itself during several important Confederate victories throughout 1862 such as Perryville and Murfreesboro. It also played a major role in stopping William S. Rosecrans’ advance towards Chattanooga in late 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga Creek. Despite initial successes however, it soon experienced many difficulties including failures at Missionary Ridge and Franklin–Nashville where it suffered severe casualties and losses of morale due to lack of supplies and equipment failure- leading to its dissolution by May 10th 1865 after Union Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter severely damaged its supply fleet on the Ohio River
