History

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam was founded in 1945 by Maulana Maudoodi, one of Pakistan's most influential Islamic thinkers. Maudoodi sought to create an organization that would promote Islamic values and solve social and economic problems within society. The group quickly gained popularity with its focus on education, welfare, and religious revivalism. In 1985, another faction was formed called "Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F)", which stands for Fazlur Rehman, with whom Maulana Maudoodi had split off from the original group. This new faction identified itself as more progressive than before, focusing on religious freedoms and democratic ideals.

Political Activity

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) has been active in Pakistani politics since its creation in 1985. In 1988, they formed an alliance with other conservative Muslim political parties, known as the Islamic Democratic Alliance (IDA), to contest elections against then prime minister Benazir Bhutto's government. After five years of unsuccessful attempts to unseat Bhutto's government, Fazlur Rehman withdrew his support for IDA and formed a new coalition, the Muttahida Majlis-eAmal (MMA), which ultimately managed to come into power after winning a majority of seats in 2002. Since then, MMA has remained an influential voice in Pakistani politics.
