The group quickly gained popularity with its focus on education, welfare, and religious revivalism. In 1985, another faction was formed called "Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F)", which stands for Fazlur Rehman, with whom Maulana Maudoodi had split off from the original group. This new faction identified itself as more progressive than before, focusing on religious freedoms and democratic ideals.
