What Is Juvenile Periodontitis (JPD)?

Juvenile Periodontitis (JPD) is an inflammatory disorder that affects the gums and supporting bone structures of children and young adults. It is caused by a bacterial infection, which leads to gum recession, tooth mobility, and bone loss. Eventually, untreated JPD can result in tooth loss or severe dental problems such as crushing of the teeth. In order for the infection to advance into JPD, prolonged exposure to bacteria along with genetic predisposition are considered factors.

Symptoms

The main symptom associated with JPD is excessive bleeding when brushing teeth or eating certain foods. Other signs may include loosened or shifting teeth, persistent bad breath, gum recession or redness/swelling of the affected area(s). Pain may also be present in more advanced stages of the disease, but this symptom is not always evident initially.

Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis begins with a complete examination of the mouth by your dentist or periodontist. X-rays may be taken to determine if there has been any destruction of underlying supporting bone tissue. Your dentist will develop a customized treatment plan depending on severity and stage of disease progression. Treatment could range from a deep cleaning procedure known as scaling/root planing to antibiotic therapy if necessary.
