Description
Joe Gibbs Racing was founded by Joe Gibbs in 1991 after leaving a career as head coach of Washington's NFL team. Formed with just three crew members and two cars for rookie driver Jimmy Makar, the organization emerged as a legitimate championship contender within a matter of years. By 1997, JGR had captured its first championship with Dale Jarrett driving to glory at the 1997 Winston Cup season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway - becoming just the fifth driver to win a Winston Cup title from outside of NASCAR's traditional stronghold in North Carolina. In 2000, Bobby Labonte won JGR's second points title — becoming only the third driver to win a Winston/Nextel/Sprint Cup Championship for an owner other than Richard Childress or Rick Hendrick since 1981. In 2005, Tony Stewart drove home another championship trophy, making him the first driver to win consecutive titles for different teams when he made the switch from Home Depot to Office Depot before 2006 began. The fourth championship came courtesy of Kyle Busch after he captured his first crown in 2015 while also earning Racer of the Year honors from nearly every major news outlet covering NASCAR — including Motorsports Illustrated magazine and SiriusXM Radio's NASH Country Weekly program recognizing drivers who stood out during their respective seasons.
