What does IVMB mean in NURSING

Intravenous Minibag (IVMB) is a bag used for administering intravenous fluids, medications, and other treatments through an IV line.

An IVMB consists of a plastic bag with a connector port that is attached to the IV line and has two chambers that are connected by flexible tubing. The two chambers allow for separate delivery of fluids and medications by adjusting the flow rate.

Using an IVMB provides flexibility when delivering appropriate amounts of different medications and fluids directly into the bloodstream. It also helps to reduce waste as only the required amount needs to be prepared for each treatment session. Furthermore, it reduces potential price increases as multiple pouches or bags of medication may not need to be purchased every time.

There can be potential risks if the device is not used properly or if any part breaks or becomes disconnected during administration, as this could cause air bubbles or medication overdose. Also, special care must be taken when switching between different infusion solutions since incompatibilities can occur when mixing certain drugs or solutions in one chamber.

Unopened containers must be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and moisture-laden conditions. If a container has been opened then it should be discarded according to protocol after 24 hours due to sterility issues unless otherwise indicated by manufacturer instructions.
