What does ISAT mean in UNCLASSIFIED

SAH stands for subarachnoid hemorrhage, which occurs when an artery in the brain bursts and bleeds into the space between the brain and skull. It can cause very serious neurological complications.

Individuals aged 18–70 years who had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage within 72 hours of presentation were eligible to take part in ISAT.

The trial lasted for four years, from 1998 to 2002. During this time, patients were followed up at 6 months, 1 year and 3 years after randomisation into either group.

The primary outcomes assessed by ISAT were mortality at one year, disability at one year (measured using the Rankin Scale) and quality of life scores at one year post-randomisation. Secondary outcomes included treatment complications, recurrence rates and long-term mortality and disability rates.

Over 1350 patients from 20 countries around the world participated in ISAT. They were randomly assigned to either receive endovascular coiling or open surgery for their aneurysm treatment.

The results showed that both treatments reduced mortality rates compared to no treatment at all but that there was no significant difference between open surgery and endovascular coiling for reducing risk of death or disability at one year follow up period. The trial also found that there was no significant difference between the two treatments regarding recurrence rate or complication rate over 4 years follow up period.
