Essential Questions and Answers on International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial in "MISCELLANEOUS»UNFILED"

What is ISAT?

What is SAH?

SAH stands for subarachnoid hemorrhage, which occurs when an artery in the brain bursts and bleeds into the space between the brain and skull. It can cause very serious neurological complications.

Who was eligible to take part in ISAT?

Individuals aged 18–70 years who had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage within 72 hours of presentation were eligible to take part in ISAT.

How long did the ISAT trial last?

The trial lasted for four years, from 1998 to 2002. During this time, patients were followed up at 6 months, 1 year and 3 years after randomisation into either group.

What were the outcomes assessed by ISAT?

The primary outcomes assessed by ISAT were mortality at one year, disability at one year (measured using the Rankin Scale) and quality of life scores at one year post-randomisation. Secondary outcomes included treatment complications, recurrence rates and long-term mortality and disability rates.

How many people participated in ISAT?

Over 1350 patients from 20 countries around the world participated in ISAT. They were randomly assigned to either receive endovascular coiling or open surgery for their aneurysm treatment.

What were the results of the study?

The results showed that both treatments reduced mortality rates compared to no treatment at all but that there was no significant difference between open surgery and endovascular coiling for reducing risk of death or disability at one year follow up period. The trial also found that there was no significant difference between the two treatments regarding recurrence rate or complication rate over 4 years follow up period.

Was anything else learned from ISAT?

Yes! In addition to comparing both treatments with regards to direct outcomes such as mortality and disability, data collected through surveys also revealed insights into patient preferences towards different treatments as well as factors influencing compliance with follow-up appointments.

If I want more information about my treatment options what should I do?

It is always important to discuss your individual case with your medical team before making decisions about your care plan – they will be able to provide tailored advice based on your personal situation. You may also want to access additional resources such as patient helplines for further information regarding different treatments available.

Are there any long term risks associated with SAH or its treatment?

Yes - Long term effects may include stroke and cognitive impairments such as difficulty thinking clearly as well as other complications related to physical activity restrictions due to poor health or mobility issues associated with treatment choices made during recovery.
