What does AMW mean in MILITARY

Amphibious Warfare (AMW) is a type of military operation consisting of operations carried out by land, sea, and air forces to seize or repel control of coastal areas, harbors, and islands.

AMW is a form of combined arms tactics that utilizes soldiers, warships, and aircraft to launch assaults from the sea onto enemy-held shores and inland objectives.

AMW involves the coordination between land forces conducting an amphibious assault from naval vessels such as landing craft or amphibious vehicles supported by helicopters. This type of warfare also involves utilization of ships with hovercraft capabilities in order to maneuver along shallow water coasts.

The effectiveness of an Amphibious Warfare mission depends on various factors that include weather conditions at the time as well as strategic planning on part of the military force conducting the mission. A successful mission could end in seizing certain territory or ports without losing too many men in battle.

Historically, Amphibious Warfare has been used during World War II by Allied Forces to invade Japanese strongholds throughout Asia Pacific region or Operation Neptune/Overlord which launched D-Day invasion during June 1944 against Nazi Germany's defenses across English Channel's beaches in France. More recently global powers have utilized this form of warfare for intervention missions such as United States Navy SEALs' raid against Osama bin Laden's compound located in Abbottabad city Pakistan back in May 2011.
