It was established in 2006 when the Army Materiel Command’s Aviation & Missile Research Development & Engineering Center merged with the defense Contract Management Agency's aviation & missile directorate. Its primary purpose is to provide research, development, engineering, and acquisition support to the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). It also carries out research on ballistic missile defense technologies such as interceptors, sensors, command-and-control systems etc. Additionally it manages contracts for highly technical material goods needed by the US Department of Defense that may include aircraft parts or components used in missiles deployed by the US military.
