What does AMPK mean in PHYSIOLOGY

AMPK stands for activated protein kinase and is an enzyme that plays a critical role in regulating energy balance inside of cells. It's found in all organisms, from plants to humans. In order for cells to maintain energy homeostasis, they must be able to detect changes in their internal environment, such as rises or drops in ATP concentration and glucose levels. That's where AMPK comes in. It senses changes in the cell and then activates metabolic pathways that help restore those levels back to normal

Essential Questions and Answers on activated protein kinase in "MEDICAL»PHYSIOLOGY"

What is the role of AMPK in metabolism?

AMPK, or activated protein kinase, plays a major role in energy metabolism by regulating metabolism and energy output. It does this by phosphorylating other proteins to activate them, as well as by activating catabolic pathways like fatty acid oxidation and glycolysis that increase cellular ATP production. In addition, it can suppress anabolic pathways such as lipogenesis and protein synthesis when necessary
