History
The IIAA was founded on April 28th 1896 in Philadelphia as The National Association of General Agents (NAGA). NAGA was created by a group of 15 independent life insurance agents who wanted to unify their voices as they sought to advocate for more favorable legislation regarding the sale and promotion of life insurance products during a time when states had highly restrictive laws controlling such activities. In 1968 it changed its name from NAGA to its present day moniker. In 1997 it opened up for membership to firms selling any type of property/casualty related product or service regardless if the firm was engaged in captive or independent agency operations.
