What does IGMD mean in DEVELOPMENT

Integrated Guided Missile Development (IGMD) is a programme of the Indian government that took place in 1983. This programme was initiated and coordinated by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the guidance of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the former President of India. The aim of this programme was to develop ballistic missiles that could be used for defence purposes and for deterrence. It has been successful in developing several short-range, medium-range, long-range, subsonic, supersonic and intercontinental ballistic missiles as well as anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). The first missile developed under this project was the Prithvi-I missile in 1988 followed by Agni missile series, Akash surface to air missile and the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile.

Explanation

The Integrated Guided Missile Development (IGMD) Program marked a new era in India's defence capability with its focus on development of a wide range of sophisticated weaponry systems such as Surface to Air Missiles, Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), Anti Tank Guided Missile systems (ATGM) and more. This program began in 1983 and was spearheaded by Dr Abdul Kalam with an objective to develop state-of-the-art Indian ballistic missiles which had high precision accuracy aiming capabilities with powerful capability against enemy targets. While some of these programs have met modest success since then due to lack of adequate funding or aging technology, other projects have managed to achieve significant milestones such as Prithvi I missile development in 1988; Agni Missile Series; Akash Surface to Air Missile system; BrahMos supersonic cruise missile; etc.

Essential Questions and Answers on Integrated Guided Missile Development in "COMMUNITY»DEVELOPMENT"

What Is Integrated Guided Missile Development (IGMD)?

Integrated Guided Missile Development (IGMD) is an Indian defense program for the research and development of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and air-to-air missiles for use by all branches of the armed forces. The program was initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation in 1983, to develop a comprehensive defense network and counter the growing threat from hostile countries in the region.

Who Initiated IGMD?

The IGMD program was initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1983.

What Is The Purpose Of The IGMD Program?

The purpose of the IGMD program is to provide comprehensive defence capability through the research and development of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and air-to-air missiles for use by all branches of the armed forces.

What Are Some Examples Of Missiles Developed Under The IGMD Program?

Some examples of missiles developed under the IGMD program are the Prithvi missile series, Akash missile system, Brahmos supersonic cruise missile system, Agni family of ballistic missiles, Barak 8 long-range surface-to-air missile system, and Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile.

What Are The Benefits Of Producing High End Missiles Through IGMD?

Developing high end missiles through ICGD provides numerous benefits such as greater deterrence against hostile neighboring countries; increased operational readiness; improved surveillance capabilities; increased range & accuracy; ability to intercept targets outside traditional enemy lines; strengthened security & military capabilities etc.

Does Other Countries Use Weapon Technologies Developed In India Under IGDM?

Yes, several other countries have shown interest in acquiring technologies developed in India under ICGD. For example Brazil has acquired technology associated with ‘Sagarika’ – an underwater launched version of Prithvi II Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM).

How Can One Get Involved In ICGD Research And Development Projects?

To get involved in ICGD research and development projects one must have an undergraduate or higher degree or diploma from a government accredited university/institution. Being from technical background may be beneficial though not required but knowledge on related subjects like electronics engineering, propulsion systems etc would be beneficial as well.

Final Words:
The Integrated Guided Missile Development program has helped strengthen India's defence capabilities significantly through the development of indigenous weapon systems which can serve multiple purposes ranging from short range offense/deterrence missions to longer range defense missions across all terrains. This program has enabled Indian armed forces with better accuracy aiming capabilities while keeping up with changing technologies over time Such programs also help facilitate technical collaboration between different allied countries who can share knowledge & expertise while aiding each other’s development objectives for better national security outcomes.
