What does AMIP mean in CIVIC & MUNICIPAL

The Alberta Municipal Infrastructure Program (AMIP) is a grant program for municipalities that provides funding for capital infrastructure projects. It is funded and administered by the Government of Alberta. AMIP grants are designed to support local governments in financing infrastructure improvements, repairs, and upgrades.

Any municipality in Alberta that has an approved Municipal Development Plan may apply for AMIP funding. Eligible applicants include cities, towns, villages, improvement districts, and special areas.

Municipalities may request up to 75% of the cost of an eligible project, up to a maximum $10 million per project. If the total project cost exceeds $10 million, additional funding must be provided from within municipal resources or other sources.

AMIP supports a wide range of infrastructure projects such as roadways, bridges and culverts, water mains and pipes, wastewater systems such as lift stations and interceptors, stormwater management systems including retention ponds and drainage ditches, curbs and gutters, sidewalks and pathways.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Generally it takes approximately six months from application submission to announce approval or rejection.

To complete your application you will need to attach supporting documents such as engineering designs/plans; financial statements; Council resolution approving terms; letters from existing funders; confirmation from province that requirements have been met; information on current state of asset; any other relevant documentation required to evaluate your proposal.

Yes – at least 25% of total eligible costs must come from municipal sources (e.g., taxes). The remaining 75% may be provided by provincial (AMIP) or federal grants or loans if available.

Yes – all projects must comply with all relevant standards (e.g., codes and regulations). In addition, all expenditures must be reported on using accepted accounting principles in accordance with award agreements between your municipality and the Government of Alberta (GOA). All reporting requirements must be followed according to the agreement between your municipality and GOA before payment will be made on project invoices/receipts.

It depends – if it is determined that your staff possess sufficient expertise or qualifications needed for completion of the project than you may hire them instead of contracting out resources but they cannot do both roles for same project at one time.
