What does ICW mean in WRESTLING

History

The origins of ICW go back to the late 1980s when Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki created New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in Tokyo. The original idea behind this promotion was to combine elements from strong style (a type of traditional Japanese wrestling) with American professional wrestling techniques. NJPW quickly became one of the most popular promotions in Japan; however, due to restrictions imposed by certain countries at that time regarding offensives moves (e.g., pile drivers), NJPW had to adjust some rules in order to comply with regulations outside Japan. As it happened with other promotions around the world during that period (for example World Championship Wrestling in the United States), NJPW encouraged its wrestlers to become involved in submission grappling and introduced “submission only” bouts where strikes were prohibited from taking place during these matches. This led to an increase in popularity for submission styles such as Brazilian JiuJitsu and catch wrestling among professional wrestlers around the globe — which eventually gave birth to what we now refer to as “International CAW Wrestling” (or simply “ICW”).

Components

ICW is composed mainly by three main components: striking techniques borrowed from Muay Thai/Kickboxing; joint manipulations such as armbars, shoulder locks and leglocks; and ground grappling positions/ transitions usually found in Brazilian jiu-jitsu or catch wrestling practices. Some strategies typical from amateur freestyle wrestling have also been incorporated into this style such as takedowns from Greco-Roman headers which includes throws like arm drags or fireman carries. Over time other combat sports like judo have also influenced ICWs ground grappling element either through particular techniques or entire throws like hip tosses or seoi nage throws characteristic from judo practitioners who converted into professional wrestlers.

Current Status

ICW has become increasingly popular over the last decade not only because it provides entertaining shows but also due its participative nature—being much safer than other forms of combat sports such as boxing or mixed martial arts contests—which makes it attractive even for non-professional athletes looking for physical activities apart from regular gym routines or those just seeking recreation times within their own friends circle while keeping safety measures always under control before engaging into any kind of situation where risk can be easily studied and measured up ahead without incurring into dangerous activities so common within other full contact sports events nowadays available around the world.
