ICBR Meaning & Overview

ICBR stands for the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research. It was founded in 1993 at the University of Florida (UF) as part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. This center’s mission is to facilitate interdisciplinary research collaborations between scientists across different disciplines related to biotechnologies, such as molecular biology, genetics, physiology, immunology, bioinformatics, and biochemistry. Through its various services and resources it provides vital assistance to many research projects dealing with new products or processes related to biotechnology that include food security and environmental safety.

ICBR Services

The ICBR offers a number of specialized services in order to assist researchers in achieving their goals more effectively and efficiently. These services include an equipment resource facility that houses a variety of specialized instruments used in the process of biotechnology; core laboratories performing experiments such as nucleic acid sequencing using state-of-the-art technologies; an animal facility utilized by researchers investigating issues that require animal models; access to bioinformatics tools for those studying large datasets; Integrated Biological Imaging Laboratory where imaging techniques are used on various organisms; stem cell core facility which allows researchers to explore the applications of stem cells; and other scientific services such as flow cytometry and mass spectrometry. All these facilities are available free of charge or at subsidized rates for students or faculty members depending upon their individual needs.
