What does IBDC mean in DISEASES

Inclusion Body Disease Of Cranes (IBDC) is a progressive, fatal neurological disorder that affects several species of cranes. It is caused by a virus that targets the white blood cells and has been identified in both wild and captive populations of cranes worldwide.

IBDC causes gradual deterioration of the central nervous system over time, leading to tremors, changes in behavior, weakness, difficulty with movement and coordination, seizures and eventually death.

The virus suspected as causing IBDC can be spread from bird to bird through contact with infected saliva or feces and can also be spread through contaminated water sources or food.

To prevent the spread of IBDC it is important to practice good biosecurity measures such as frequent cleaning and disinfection of feeders/drinkers; separating birds into flocks according to age groups; minimizing contact between different crane flocks; monitoring for signs of disease; prompt reporting to local health officials; adequate quarantine periods for new birds entering a flock; proper disposal of carcasses; vaccination against other diseases if available; avoidance or minimization use antibiotics when possible.

There is no known effective treatment for IBDC at this time. For birds currently infected with the virus some supportive care may help extend their lives but ultimately death will occur due to progressive neurodegeneration caused by the virus itself.
