What does AM mean in AIRCRAFT & AVIATION

To become an Aviation Mechanic, you must possess a minimum of 18 months of experience working on aircraft or complete an FAA-approved certification program. You also must pass knowledge and practical exams administered by the FAA.

It can take anywhere from several weeks to more than two years to become certified as an Aviation Mechanic depending on your experience level and the type of certification program you choose.

The scope of work for AMs covers many aspects of inspections, repairs and maintenance of aircraft systems such as engines, airframes, avionics systems and related components. They follow detailed instructions from manufacturer's manuals when making repairs in order to ensure safety compliance with industry standards set forth by the FAA.

Common tools used by Aviation Mechanics include hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers; power tools such as drills; specialty tools like torque wrenches; measuring instruments such as calipers; computers; precision instruments like micrometers; test equipment like oscilloscopes; welding equipment; hoists and engine stands.

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities in Aeronautical Engineering Technology are expected to grow at a faster rate than average over the next decade due in part to advances in technology leading to increased demand for skilled mechanics in this field.
