What does I&D mean in PHYSIOLOGY

Incision and drainage (I&D) is a medical procedure used to treat infections or abscesses, typically bacterial in origin. The goal of the procedure is to relieve symptoms such as pain, discomfort, swelling and/or inflammation.

This procedure can be performed by surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners or other trained healthcare providers. Generally speaking, an incision is made with a scalpel into the area where an infection or abscess has formed so that the pus can be drained away.

Pain associated with this procedure varies from patient to patient; however general anesthesia may be administered prior to the surgery if warranted by patient's condition. Most patients report some degree of discomfort after the operation due to stitches in the incision areas and any residual inflammation or infection symptoms. Q4: How long does it take for I&D to heal? A4: Generally speaking healing time ranges from two weeks (for smaller infections/abscesses) up to four weeks (for larger ones). After initial recovery period has passed most patients are able return to their normal activities without difficulty; however any additional swelling or infection should be reported immediately a healthcare provider for further assessment. A5: As with any surgical procedure there may be some risks involved depending on each patient's individual situation and health condition; these include infection at the site of incision/drainage, scarring at the wound site, excessive bleeding during surgery as well as reactions due to medications administered prior or post-surgery.
