What does HLW mean in COMMUNITY

HLW stands for Historic Landscapes of Wales. It is a project developed by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, to protect and preserve historic sites, structures and landscapes in Wales.

The aim of the project is to discover and research the stories behind various places in Wales in order to better understand their past, present and future. This includes researching the physical context and recorded history of certain locations as well as exploring potential development opportunities.

The HLW project is developed by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service.

Various activities have been conducted under the framework of this project such as archaeological excavations, surveys and analysis of sites or structures as well as researching their historical context. In some cases it involves community engagement events or projects that support local communities in preserving their heritage.

The outcomes from this project include gathering detailed information on selected sites which can be used for understanding current conditions or issues affecting these locations; engaging with local stakeholders in order to promote public understanding of heritage; developing options for conservation management or even designating a site as a protected area; creating effective strategies for conserving different types of landscape features; and enhancing knowledge about cultural practices connected with certain sites or landscapes.
