Role & Responsibilities

The role of an ALCO can vary depending on their specific area of expertise. Generally speaking, their main function is to provide direction and guidance in relation to safe launch operations. ALCOs work with other launch crew members to ensure that all safety measures have been taken prior to takeoff, such as checking fuel levels, pressure readings, engine temperatures and other relevant vital statistics. After take off, ALCOs remain in contact with ground control teams to track the progress of the flight until it reaches its destination or a safe altitude. In addition to this core responsibility, they may also be tasked with managing communications between ground control staff, relaying messages between sites and ensuring compliance with international aviation regulations.

Training & Qualifications

In order to become an ALCO, individuals must complete specialized training programs offered by various organizations across the world including air force bases and national defense academies. The length of these programs varies based on the complexity and scope of the mission; however, most require at least two years' worth of education before candidates can be certified as qualified Aircraft Launch Control Officers. To be accepted into one of these programs potential candidates must meet a certain set of minimum qualifications which generally include passing a physical examination, completing a security clearance test and having no criminal record or negative information on their background checks.
