What does GUSA mean in UNIVERSITIES

GUSA stands for the Georgetown University Student Association, which is the official student government of Georgetown University. The group provides a voice for students on campus and serves as a liaison between its members and the university administration. Additionally, GUSA works to advocate for causes relevant to students and organize extracurricular activities.

Representatives for GUSA are elected through a general election held each fall semester. Candidates must be registered undergraduate students at Georgetown in order to run for office. All students who wish to participate in this election must register with the university’s Office of Elections prior to the candidacy filing deadline that year.

GUSA provides services to improve student life on campus, including advocating for issues important to them, such as better mental health or academic resources; organizing events throughout the year, from cheaply-priced movie premieres to career fairs; hosting workshops related to financial literacy or leadership development; representing student voices before administrative decisions are made; conducting surveys and engaging with faculty and staff on projects that benefit student life; and much more.

GUSA holds weekly meetings during both Fall and Spring semesters that are open to all members of the Georgetown community. These meetings generally occur on Wednesday evenings and serve as a platform for representatives to discuss current initiatives, share updates from their committees, field questions from their constituents, hear announcements from other organizations, and pass new legislation.

Yes! Alongside the general body of representatives, GUSA has an Executive Board composed of six full-time members who oversee different departments within its organization. This includes positions such as President/Vice President (who manage overall operations), Secretary (who ensures documents are filed properly), Treasurer (who manages finances), Historian (who documents activities and achievements), Communications Director (who manages public relations) ,and Chief of Staff (who provides support services).

There are eight major committees which reports directly to the Executive Board within GUSA including Student Life & Diversity Committee; Academic Affairs Committee; Finance & Resources Committee; Outreach & Engagement Committee; Wellness & Health Affairs Committee; Governmental Relations Committee; Global Affairs Committee; Media & Press Relations Committee.

Attending weekly meetings is recommended if you’re interested in getting involved with GUSA or learning more about current initiatives but is not mandatory. Involvement beyond attending meetings varies depending upon one’s level of interest and dedication towards particular projects or issues they may have decided upon priorly joining. Generally speaking though it would require some amount of time commitment in order be adequately fulfill one's role.

For specific projects approved by the Executive Board diverging up limited funds can be made available on request via an application process for individuals hoping pursue opportunities relating but not exclusive directly towards tasks assigned within their role status as part of a committee or general representative.
