What does AKK mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The Agency Against Corruption (AKK) is an independent public institution whose mission is to lead and coordinate the fight against corruption through preventive measures, investigations, capacity building and advocacy. Its primary aim is to prevent, detect and investigate acts of corruption in public institutions throughout Albania.

The goals of the AKK include promoting integrity, transparency and accountability in public life; preventing acts of corruption; detecting and prosecuting offenders; advocating reform initiatives which support anti-corruption efforts; strengthening law enforcement capacities to combat corruption; and increasing public awareness about combating corruption.

The AKK has its own specialized investigative body that monitors all cases related to corruption at both the national and local levels. It also works closely with domestic law enforcement agencies, state anti-corruption commissions, international organizations such as Transparency International, as well as civil society groups.

The AKK undertakes a range of activities including capacity building for public officials on proper conduct in public office; monitoring compliance with ethical standards in public services; conducting investigations into complaints related to corrupt practices; providing legal advice on prevention of and response to corrupt practices; developing public awareness campaigns about combating corrupt practices; issuing reports on its findings from investigations conducted by its staff; and working closely with relevant stakeholders including government bodies, the media, civil society organisations, private sector entities etc.

Anyone may file a complaint or provide information regarding potential acts of corruption. Reports may be submitted anonymously or with contact information provided by the reporter if they wish follow up from the agency.

Yes. When needed, specialized lawyers employed by the agency will assist in court proceedings throughout criminal proceedings relating to corrupt acts investigated by AKK.

Absolutely! The Agency actively collaborates with other government institutions such as Transparency International Albania(TIA), foreign partners such as EU Delegation in Tirana or OSCE Presence in Albania, CSOs ( Civil Society Organizations) ; international/bilateral donors such as USAID, DFID, UNDP who support Transparencys efforts.

Yes. If one is not satisfied with outcome or lack thereof from their initial complaint filing then they may request an internal review under Article 54 & 55 of Law nr 107/2017 "On Agencu kundër Korrupsionit".This request must be received no later than 10 days after receipt of decision from competent authority.

Depending on the severity of false information provided this could constitute penal offense according to Articles 287-290 & 269/2 Criminal Code.
